First Female Gardaí 1959
In July 1959, following a long-running campaign by civic groups, twelve women joined An Garda Siochána and were allocated to Pearse Street Station. Since then, women have made a crucial contribution to the organisation. There are currently almost 4,000 females making up approx. 30% of Garda members. This is above the European average for female representation within police services. In the samples below, you will hear from some of the female members who have made significant contributions to the history of An Garda Síochána.
